Greater Toronto Hotel Association and GreenStep Announce Strategic Sustainability Partnership
Partnership to accelerate decarbonization across the Greater Toronto Area’s hospitality sector through EcoFund, energy assessments, and carbon action planning
TORONTO, ON – The Greater Toronto Hotel Association (GTHA) and GreenStep today announced a landmark partnership to advance sustainable practices across the Greater Toronto Area’s hotel sector. The collaboration will provide GTHA member hotels that choose to participate with a comprehensive pathway to measure, reduce, and communicate their environmental impact – anchored by GreenStep’s proven EcoFund model and supported by a full suite of decarbonization services.
“Our member hotels are ready to lead on sustainability, and this partnership gives them the tools and support to do it effectively. GreenStep brings credibility, practical expertise, and a model that directly ties guest engagement to real environmental outcomes.”
— Sara Anghel, President & CEO, Greater Toronto Hotel Association
The partnership comes at a pivotal moment for the region’s hospitality industry, as hotels face rising expectations from guests, investors, and municipalities to demonstrate meaningful progress on climate commitments. Through this agreement, GTHA members will gain preferred access to GreenStep’s full portfolio of sustainability services, with a particular focus on the EcoFund program – a pioneering guest-contribution model supporting hotels across Canada in delivering measurable impact.
About the EcoFund Program
At the heart of the partnership is GreenStep’s EcoFund, an innovative program that invites hotel guests to make a nightly contribution that is pooled and directed to verified energy, waste or water consumption reduction projects.
EcoFund provides participating hotels with:
- Access to a curated portfolio of financed, eligible energy, water and waste reduction projects
- Transparent reporting and a dedicated marketing collateral kit to communicate impact
- Alignment with globally recognized sustainability standards, including the GSTC
“We’re excited to partner with the Greater Toronto Hotel Association to help hotels across the region accelerate their sustainability journey. EcoFund offers a simple and scalable way for hotels to reduce emissions while inviting guests to be part of the solution. It’s about creating real, measurable impact while also building stronger guest connections and long-term business value.”
— Angela Nagy, President and CEO, GreenStep
A Full Decarbonization Pathway for GTHA Members
Beyond EcoFund, the partnership provides GTHA members with a structured, science-aligned pathway to measure and reduce operational emissions. GreenStep’s services available under the partnership include energy assessments & action plans and carbon footprint measurement.
A Proven Model, Scaled for the GTA
The Greater Toronto Area is home to a dense concentration of internationally branded and independently operated hotels, conference properties, and boutique establishments, making it one of Canada’s most strategically important markets for accelerating hospitality sector decarbonization.
