At the GTHA, we’re proud to celebrate the remarkable individuals whose passion and dedication bring hospitality to life every day. This October, we are highlighting two incredible team members whose service, creativity, and care embody the true spirit of our industry.
Meet Tommy Chan — Residence Inn by Marriott Toronto Downtown/Entertainment District

For the past two years, Tommy Chan has been an integral part of the Residence Inn by Marriott Toronto Downtown/Entertainment District team as a Maintenance Associate.
What he loves most about hospitality is
“Interacting with our guests, helping them, and ensuring that they have a great stay.”
One of his most rewarding experiences has been working alongside his fellow associates on projects that benefit both the hotel and its guests.
Outside of work, Tommy enjoys traveling, with Okinawa, Japan being his favorite destination — a place where he finds both inspiration and joy.
Meet Mervyn Edwards — Chelsea Hotel, Toronto

Mervyn Edwards’ story is one of extraordinary dedication. Born in Jamaica, Mervyn moved to Canada with his family in search of better opportunities. On April 22, 1976, he began his career at the Chelsea Hotel as a Carpenter — a role he has proudly held for 49 years.
Known for his creativity and craftsmanship, Mervyn has designed guest rooms, built custom items, and set the standard for excellence in his trade. His bright smile and humming presence in the halls have made him a beloved colleague and friend to many.
Beyond the hotel, Mervyn is deeply committed to his community. As President of the Jamaican Canadian Rugby Association, he raises funds to support youth programs, helping young people develop skills, stay active, and find positive opportunities. Each year, he also donates clothes and supplies to churches and shelters in Jamaica.
A man of integrity, humility, and generosity, Mervyn uplifts others, mentors the next generation, and exemplifies teamwork. As the Chelsea Hotel approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, we are proud to celebrate Mervyn’s 49 years of service and the lasting legacy he continues to build.
These stories reflect the heart of hospitality — individuals whose dedication and passion make every guest experience meaningful. We thank Tommy and Mervyn for their outstanding contributions and for inspiring all of us with their commitment to service.
