At the GTHA, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible people who bring our industry to life each and every day. This September, we’re excited to highlight two individuals whose dedication, warmth, and leadership continue to make a lasting impact on the guest experience.
Meet Marlene Barcelos — The Waterside Inn

For the past 16 years, Marlene Barcelos has been a cornerstone of The Waterside Inn, Mississauga team. Starting as a Sales & Catering Coordinator, she worked her way up to Social Catering Sales Manager, where she now plans everything from weddings and showers to anniversaries and corporate events.
Her attention to detail, creativity, and care for each guest experience have earned her glowing reviews and recognition, including WPIC’s On-Site Coordinator of the Year Award and multiple local honours for Best Wedding Services and Best Wedding/Event Planner.
“I love assisting guests and clients — helping their ideas come to life and seeing their vision realized. It’s so rewarding to be part of their most special celebrations.”
One of Marlene’s career highlights are receiving the WPIC award — a recognition that validated her passion and dedication from both clients and industry peers.
Outside of work, she treasures visiting her family’s roots in Portugal and exploring Aruba, a destination she praises for its unmatched hospitality and culture.
Meet Karyl-Anh — Alt Hotel Toronto

Born in New Caledonia and shaped by a multicultural upbringing, Karyl-Anh has built a career defined by curiosity and passion for service. Her journey in hospitality has taken her across the globe — from Australia to France, and now Canada — where she continues to thrive at Alt Hotel Toronto.
She began her career in Canada with an internship at Alt Hotel St. John’s as Assistant Guest Services Manager before transferring to Toronto. Over the years, she has grown through roles in both food & beverage and front desk operations, and today serves as Assistant Food & Beverage Manager, overseeing the restaurant, bar, grab-and-go, and banquet services.
“Hospitality is in my blood. I love making people happy — bringing a smile to their face, creating memorable experiences, and being of service.”
A highlight of her career so far has been stepping into leadership early on — co-leading a department and being trusted with responsibility that shaped her skills and confidence.
For travel, Australia holds a special place for the memories it gave her with family, while in Canada, St. John’s remains closest to her heart as the starting point of her Canadian journey.
These stories are just a glimpse into the inspiring people who bring hospitality to life every day. We thank Marlene and Karyl-Anh for their contributions and continued excellence in the industry.
